Victorian-era painter John Atkinson Grimshaw (pictured), born in Leeds named the house “Castle by the Sea” from Longfellows Poem.

Grimshaw is without question the most important artist to have lived and painted in Scarborough.

Nestled below the ruins of Scarborough’s ancient castle our family run Bed and Breakfast guest house, commands spectacular views of Scarborough’s North Bay & fabulous East Coast in North Yorkshire, where you can relax in this most tranquil setting.

Janet and JohnJanet & John offer a warm welcome to their guests. Since taking over the Guest House, we have now re-opened and commenced an ongoing refurbishment programme, as we want to return this unique building to it’s former glory. Our guests comfort and enjoyment are always our priority.

We also offer free parking at the front of the house or in our garage to our Residents and Guests.
