John Atkinson Grimshaw had the house specially built for his artistic needs, completed in 1876 and he moved in with his wife and ten children.


Guests will find many original features still preserved and examples of his work can be found and viewed on the walls all around the building.

Victorian-era painter John Atkinson Grimshaw (pictured), born in Leeds named the house “Castle by the Sea” from Longfellows Poem.

Grimshaw is without question the most important artist to have lived and painted in Scarborough.
